Hurricanes Open Trophy Defense Against the Panthers
The 2026-27 NHL regular season begins on Tuesday, September 29, when the Carolina Hurricanes raise their second Stanley Cup championship banner at Lenovo Center in Raleigh before hosting the Florida Panthers. It is a fitting way to open the calendar: the last three Stanley Cup trophies have been lifted by one of these two franchises. Florida won back-to-back titles in 2024 and 2025 before Carolina dethroned them with a 4-2 series victory over the Vegas Golden Knights in June 2026.
The banner ceremony precedes a 5 p.m. ET puck drop on ESPN, the first of a three-game opening-night slate that also features the New York Rangers at the Boston Bruins at 8 p.m. ET and the Chicago Blackhawks at the defending Western Conference champion Golden Knights at 10:30 p.m. ET. ESPN2 will air the Hurricanes' 2026 Stanley Cup championship film on Saturday night as a lead-in to the season.
Tkachuk Brothers Team Up in Florida
Florida's biggest summer move — and arguably the league's — was the acquisition of Brady Tkachuk from the Ottawa Senators, reuniting him on the same roster as his younger brother Matthew Tkachuk. Brady finished the preseason with an undisclosed minor injury and missed Florida's final exhibition games, but head coach Paul Maurice said the forward resumed skating this week and remains on track for the opener. Maurice has reiterated throughout camp that there is no concern about Tuesday's availability.
In his lone preseason appearance for the Panthers, Brady Tkachuk logged a Gordie Howe hat trick — two goals, an assist, and a fighting major — in a 6-3 win over Carolina. The performance cemented his place on Florida's top line, and the Tkachuk brothers' combination is widely regarded as one of the most physically imposing pairings in the league heading into a season in which the Panthers are intent on reclaiming the Cup they surrendered to the Hurricanes.
McKenna Expected to Make His NHL Debut in Toronto
At 7 p.m. ET on Sportsnet, the Canadian spotlight turns to Scotiabank Arena, where the Toronto Maple Leafs host the Montreal Canadiens. The anticipated centre of attention is Gavin McKenna, the 18-year-old from Whitehorse, Yukon, who was selected first overall in the 2026 NHL Draft. McKenna spent the summer preparing for exactly this moment and attended his first Leafs rookie practice with what he described as barely contained excitement.
Ice HockeyMcKenna Debuts as NHL Preseason Opens; Oilers Rout Jets 5-2In his only preseason game, McKenna drew the night's loudest crowd response when his name was announced over the public address system. He was held off the scoresheet but generated offensive chances and showed the vision and skating that justified the number-one selection. As a freshman at Penn State last season, he posted 51 points — 15 goals and 36 assists — in 35 NCAA games and finished as a Hobey Baker Award top-10 finalist. Toronto has not committed publicly to him in the opening-night lineup, but all indications from camp point toward a debut against the Canadiens.
A Record Season Starts Here
The 2026-27 schedule is the most expansive in NHL history: 84 games per team and a total of 1,344 regular-season contests, both all-time highs. The regular season runs through Saturday, April 10. The Canadian side of opening night adds a Vancouver Canucks at Edmonton Oilers matchup at 10 p.m. ET on Sportsnet.
For Carolina, raising the banner is both ceremony and statement. The Hurricanes become just the sixth franchise in the salary-cap era to win two championships, and they begin their Cup defense at home against the most recent dynasty the league has produced. Their opening-night opponent intends to take that banner down by spring.
