When the Vancouver Canucks locked up defenceman Zeev Buium to an eight-year, $75.04 million extension on September 4, they changed more than their own salary structure. They reset the market for young NHL defencemen — and nowhere is that reset felt more acutely than in Detroit, where the Red Wings still have no general manager to negotiate with Simon Edvinsson.
Why Buium Changes Edvinsson's Math
Buium's contract carries an average annual value of $9.38 million. His NHL production: 26 points across 76 career games. Edvinsson, 23, posted 25 points in 72 games during the 2025–26 season alone — and did so while averaging 22:21 of ice time per game, second most among Red Wings defencemen.
The comparison is not perfect. Buium plays on a playoff contender; Edvinsson operates in a rebuilding environment. But agents do not negotiate in a vacuum. Before Buium signed, the prevailing estimate for Edvinsson was roughly five years at around $8 million per season. That figure now looks conspicuously low.
Red Wings Stuck Without a GM
Detroit's core problem is not finding the money. It is finding someone with authority to spend it. Steve Yzerman transitioned to a senior advisor role earlier this summer, and the organisation has been searching for his replacement ever since, reportedly engaging an outside search firm. As of Labour Day — September 7 — no hire had been announced.
Assistant general manager Shawn Horcoff is handling day-to-day hockey operations, but reports indicate he does not have the authority to finalise major contract extensions. The targeted Labour Day deadline for a new hire has been missed.
Edvinsson's agent, Peter Werner, was measured in public comments: "We are waiting patiently for a new general manager." That patience, following the Buium signing, now comes with a higher price attached.
The September 15 Deadline
Under the current collective bargaining agreement, teams may sign restricted free agents to eight-year extensions only until September 15. After that date, the maximum term drops to seven years — and the maximum term for a deal with another organisation drops to six years. For a 23-year-old cornerstone defenceman, the difference between a seven-year and an eight-year deal translates directly to total contract value.
PanoramaSeguin Plays 14 Minutes in Stars Win, Stays Coy on OpenerDetroit's training camp opens September 17, two days after the deadline. If the Red Wings emerge from September 15 without a new GM and without an extension signed, they face a compressed timeline to negotiate a shorter deal — or they carry an unsigned Edvinsson into a season that begins September 29.
Candidates and Clock
The Red Wings have conducted interviews with both internal and external candidates. Names in circulation include assistant GMs Horcoff and Kris Draper, VP of hockey operations Niklas Lidstrom, Florida Panthers assistant GM Brett Peterson, and Carolina Hurricanes assistant GM Darren Yorke. No announcement has come.
Seven days remain until the eight-year window closes. Detroit must solve its leadership question before it can even begin to solve its Edvinsson question — and the Buium contract has ensured the latter will be an expensive conversation whenever it finally happens.
