The IOC has defended its decision to ban Ukrainian skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych from wearing a 'helmet of remembrance' at Milano-Cortina 2026, citing the need for political neutrality across all competing nations.

IOC spokesperson Mark Adams addressed the controversial ban during a press briefing, explaining the organization's position on athlete activism and political messaging at the Olympic Games. The decision has sparked debate about the balance between freedom of expression and maintaining the apolitical nature of Olympic competition.

Heraskevych, who competes in skeleton, had intended to wear a specially designed helmet to commemorate victims of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. However, the IOC's rules prohibit political statements or demonstrations on the field of play, podium, or during official ceremonies.

IOC explains neutrality policy

"We want them to campaign, we want them to have their voice, that's very important and we're going to choose the number of opportunities they have to use their platform," Adams stated. He emphasized that athletes can express their views through social media and in the mixed zone where media interviews take place.

"You can do that on social media accounts and media accounts in the mixed zone. We encourage them to use the platform, we want them to use the platform," Adams continued, highlighting the IOC's support for athlete expression in appropriate settings.

The challenge of global conflicts

Adams addressed the fundamental challenge facing the IOC in maintaining consistency across all participating nations. "There are 130 conflicts happening around the world. We cannot have 130 different conflicts feature, no matter how terrible they are," he explained.

The spokesperson emphasized that this policy applies universally, not targeting any specific nation or conflict. "It's not just about your conflict, it's about all conflicts," Adams said, referring to the need for equal treatment of all geopolitical situations affecting Olympic athletes.

Athlete activism at the Olympics

The case highlights the ongoing tension between the IOC's traditional stance on political neutrality and growing calls for athletes to use their platforms for social and political causes. The organization has gradually relaxed some restrictions in recent years, allowing limited forms of expression before competition begins.

However, the field of play, medal ceremonies, and official Olympic venues remain strictly regulated zones where political messaging is prohibited. This policy has been tested repeatedly, with athletes from various nations seeking to draw attention to issues ranging from human rights to environmental concerns.

The Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics will be closely watched for how the IOC enforces these rules while respecting athletes' desires to advocate for causes important to them. The Heraskevych case sets a precedent that the organization intends to maintain its neutrality policy despite the emotional weight of ongoing global conflicts.
