Nilsson's clean slate earns a commanding win

Sweden swept both mass-start events at the IBU Regional Baltic Biathlon Cup and Estonian Summer Biathlon Championships in Otepää on Sunday, with Emma Nilsson and Henning Sjökvist claiming the respective titles. Nilsson's victory in the women's race was the more dominant of the two: shooting a perfect 20 out of 20 across all four stages, she crossed the finish line 52.4 seconds ahead of her Swedish compatriot Annie Lind. Regina Ermits of Estonia completed the podium in third.

The margin reflects what a clean range day looks like in summer biathlon's mass-start format. With all competitors starting together, errors on the range translate directly into penalty laps rather than time on the course — and Nilsson avoided every one of them. Lind, who shot 18 out of 20, had no answer for the gap accumulated through two penalty laps.

Sjökvist edges a three-way sprint in the men's race

The men's mass start produced a very different kind of drama. As the final shooting stage cleared, Sweden's Henning Sjökvist, Estonia's Mark-Markos Kehva — crowned the Estonian summer champion in the discipline — and Latvia's Andrejs Rastorgujevs were all within ten seconds of each other, all having posted an identical 17 out of 20 on the range. The race came down to a straight chase through the final loop, with Sjökvist finding the better speed to take the title at the finish line. Kehva finished second and Rastorgujevs third.

The result gave Sweden both gold medals on the day and reinforced the competitive depth that the national federation has been building through the summer preparation period.

Weekend context: Norway dominated the sprints

Saturday's sprint events at Tehvandi Sports Centre told a different story. Johan-Olav Botn of Norway won the men's 10 km sprint with eight of ten shots on target, ahead of Einar Hedegart and Olympic silver medallist Vetle Sjåstad Christiansen, who placed third. In the women's 7.5 km sprint, Annie Lind took the first of her two podium finishes across the weekend, edging Estonia's Regina Ermits by 1.8 seconds.

The two-day format — sprint on Saturday followed by mass start on Sunday — provides athletes with a compact test of both individual discipline and collective race management, making Otepää a useful data point for coaching staff ahead of the winter season.

Early-season checkpoint

The Estonian Summer Biathlon Championships are part of the broader IBU regional summer calendar, which functions as a key preparation block before the World Cup circuit resumes on snow. For the Swedish biathletes, a day in which Nilsson shot without error and Sjökvist won on leg speed in a final sprint represents exactly the kind of feedback that can be built on. Lind's silver was the fourth podium result of the summer for the Swedish women's group. The next major summer roller-ski event on the calendar is the Rollerski World Championships in Madona, Latvia, scheduled for later this month.
