Strelow Breaks Germany's 12-Year Dresden Drought
Justus Strelow gave the home crowd at the Heinz-Steyer-Stadion exactly what it came for on Sunday, winning the men's mass-start at the 2026 M4Energy City Biathlon Dresden in 33:36 to claim the first German victory at the event since Erik Lesser's triumph in Püttlingen in 2014. Racing over a 13.8 km course with four shooting stages, the 29-year-old Saxon made only two errors and built enough of a buffer to hold off a relentless Éric Perrot, who crossed the line three seconds back despite carrying three misses. Italy's veteran Lukas Hofer rounded out the podium just half a second behind Perrot — a margin that underlined the intensity of the sprint finish that lit up the stadium banks of the Elbe.
Fellow Germans Philipp Horn (+3.9 s) and Philipp Nawrath (+12.1 s) completed a dominant top five for the DSV, raising early-season confidence ahead of a World Cup circuit that opens in Kontiolahti in December. Strelow dedicated the victory to the Dresden crowd that has cheered him through several near-misses at the city-centre event in previous years.
Vobornikova's Perfect Shooting Sweeps the Women's Race
If Strelow's win was built on consistency, Czech biathlete Tereza Vobornikova's women's victory was pure precision. The 26-year-old hit all 20 targets across four stages and won the 11.5 km mass-start in 31:50.6, finishing 12.2 seconds clear of Austria's Anna Gandler and 17.0 seconds ahead of Lisa Vittozzi, who enters the coming season as one of the defending World Cup overall title contenders. It was Vobornikova's first major summer biathlon win of her career.
Germany's Janina Hettich-Walz threatened the podium in fourth place (+27.8 s), while Olympic gold medallist Justine Braisaz-Bouchet struggled at the first standing stage and could only manage sixth. Two-time World Champion Vanessa Voigt finished ninth as she continues to rebuild her form after a difficult Olympic campaign.
A New Format Tested Before the Season Begins
The 2026 edition introduced a revised race format that incorporated Le Mans-style staggered starts and a penalty-loop system modelled loosely on motorsport sprint formats, giving the event a festival atmosphere distinct from the standard World Cup template. Around 12,000 spectators packed the stadium on the Elbe, with live coverage broadcast on ZDF in Germany.
For both winners, Dresden represents a first meaningful step towards proving their form ahead of a 2026–27 Biathlon World Cup season that carries extra weight: the next Winter Olympics in four years ensure every pre-season data point is scrutinised more carefully than usual. Vobornikova and Strelow served notice that they intend to be factors. The next major summer biathlon event on the calendar is the IBU Summer Championships, with the World Cup season opener in Kontiolahti set for late November.
