Elvira Oeberg won the women's sprint at the 2026 Swedish Biathlon Summer Championships in Östersund on Saturday, shooting 9 of 10 targets — her only miss coming in the standing stage — to finish 44 seconds clear of the field. Johanna Skottheim was second with an 8/10 scorecard, and Ella Halvarsson completed an all-Swedish podium in third, 46.1 seconds behind Oeberg.
The result reversed Friday's individual-race order, where Anna Magnusson had taken gold ahead of Oeberg. Magnusson did not feature in Saturday's sprint podium, leaving Oeberg to produce the weekend's sharpest shooting performance and claim the title outright. With the 2026/27 IBU World Cup season approaching, the victory reinforces her standing as one of Sweden's primary medal candidates on the circuit.
Ponsiluoma Claims Second Gold in Two Days
Martin Ponsiluoma completed a weekend double, adding sprint gold to the individual title he had secured on Friday. Three misses at the shooting range — a 7/10 score — were not enough to blunt him: Ponsiluoma's cross-country speed on the roller-ski course proved decisive, earning an 8.3-second margin over silver medallist Sebastian Samuelsson, who shot a cleaner 8/10. Malte Stefansson took bronze, 26 seconds behind the winner.
The double title comes at a personally charged moment for Ponsiluoma. His partner and long-time Sweden teammate Hanna Oeberg confirmed earlier this month that she will sit out the entire 2026/27 international season following the couple's announcement in July that they are expecting their first child. With Oeberg absent, Ponsiluoma heads into the World Cup campaign as the standard-bearer for Sweden's men. He is already confirmed for the City Biathlon Dresden on 23 August, where he will line up alongside Olympic champion Éric Perrot and World Cup leader Sturla Holm Lægreid in the show-format event on the banks of the Elbe.
Sweden's Depth Beyond the Headlines
The championships underlined that Swedish biathlon is not solely dependent on its most prominent names. Samuelsson's sprint silver, Skottheim's runner-up finish in the women's race, Magnusson's individual gold on Friday, and Stefansson's men's bronze all point to a squad with genuine competitive depth across both genders. Halvarsson's podium in the women's sprint was an additional positive, providing the coaching staff with further options as autumn selection decisions approach.
The Östersund weekend also served as a dress rehearsal for the Dresden event. Several Swedish athletes are expected to feature in Saxony later this month, giving the national staff a final look at form ahead of the World Cup opener. The IBU has not yet announced the exact dates for the first regular-season competitions, but the summer schedule — which also includes the Toppidrettsveka in Norway and the Trollhättan Action Week — continues through August before the circuit's autumn preparation phase begins.
