Alonso Rodriguez clinched her place at the 2025 ISMF World Championships, earning Spain a quota in ski mountaineering—a discipline making its Olympic debut at the upcoming Winter Games. The achievement comes with profound emotional significance for the athlete, whose father was among the pioneers of skimo in Spain's Sierra Nevada region.
Speaking the day after securing her Olympic berth, Alonso Rodriguez reflected on the connection between her sporting journey and her father's influence. "Ski mountaineering has always been present in my life because my father was a mountain guide," she explained. "He was one of the pioneers of ski mountaineering there in Sierra Nevada."
Tragically, her father passed away in an accident approximately 15 years ago, before Alonso Rodriguez could share the sport with him directly. However, his friends—the very people he had taught—became her mentors in ski mountaineering. "I never had time to do this sport with him because he died about 15 years ago in an accident," she said. "And my father's friends were ultimately the ones who taught me ski mountaineering. So for me it was really beautiful because even though I didn't have time to do ski mountaineering with my father, his friends taught me—the ones he had taught. So in a way it was like closing a circle."
Father's Legacy Drives Olympic Dream
The timing of her Olympic qualification carries additional poignancy. Alonso Rodriguez noted that the 15th anniversary of her father's passing was approaching at the time of her achievement. "My father is a force that I always have and that will always accompany me," she said. "I thought a lot because tomorrow will be 15 years since he left. I would love to share it."
The support system surrounding the Spanish athlete extends beyond her father's memory to her entire family, who have been instrumental in helping her reach this milestone. "For me, my family is my strength, my life," Alonso Rodriguez emphasized. "They have always been with me, they have always supported me, they have helped me. They have taken me wherever necessary because I was chasing my dreams and there it became reality. So I owe it to them."

Alonso Rodriguez's qualification represents a significant moment for Spanish winter sports as ski mountaineering prepares for its first appearance at the Olympic Games.
