Snowboarding legend Shaun White will appear as a special guest on NHK's broadcast of the men's halfpipe final at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics.

The three-time Olympic gold medalist will join Japan's national broadcaster for their coverage of the event, which airs on February 14 at 3:25 AM JST (February 13 late night). White's appearance adds star power to what promises to be one of the most anticipated events of the Winter Games.

According to NHK's announcement, White will share his thoughts on his longtime rival and friend Ayumu Hirano, the Japanese snowboarder who has competed against White at the highest level for over a decade. The two athletes have pushed each other to new heights throughout their careers, with Hirano winning Olympic gold in halfpipe at the 2022 Beijing Games after White's retirement.

White's Olympic Legacy

Shaun White revolutionized halfpipe snowboarding during his competitive career, winning gold medals at the 2006 Turin, 2010 Vancouver, and 2018 PyeongChang Olympics. The American rider, known for his signature amplitude and technical innovation, retired from competition after the 2022 Beijing Olympics, where he finished fourth in his final Olympic appearance.

His rivalry with Hirano defined much of the sport's modern era. The Japanese athlete, who won silver behind White in 2018 before claiming gold in 2022, has spoken publicly about the respect and friendship between them despite their fierce competition.

Milano Cortina Halfpipe Competition

The men's halfpipe final at Milano Cortina 2026 will showcase the next generation of riders competing for Olympic glory. While neither White nor Hirano will compete, their influence on the sport remains evident in the tricks and style of today's athletes.

NHK's decision to feature White in their broadcast reflects the enduring appeal of the American legend, particularly in Japan where snowboard halfpipe enjoys massive popularity thanks to Hirano's success.

The broadcast will provide comprehensive coverage of the final, with White's insider perspective adding depth to the analysis of one of winter sports' most spectacular disciplines.
