Day 16 of the Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympics brought a packed schedule of winter sports action, featuring Japanese athletes in ski cross and spectacular performances in the figure skating exhibition gala.
Japanese broadcaster NHK highlighted the day's key events, which included the men's ski cross competition in freestyle skiing, the figure skating exhibition featuring Olympic medalists, and the mass start events in speed skating.
In the men's ski cross, Japan fielded three competitors: Kei Furuno, Ryuto Kobayashi, and Ryu Sugai. Ski cross is one of freestyle skiing's most dynamic disciplines, where four skiers race simultaneously down a course filled with jumps, rollers, and tight turns. The format creates intense head-to-head competition and unpredictable racing conditions.
Figure Skating Exhibition Showcases Medal Winners
The figure skating exhibition gala provided a celebratory conclusion to the Olympic competition, with medalists from various disciplines performing in a more relaxed, entertaining atmosphere. Unlike the competitive events, the exhibition allows skaters to showcase their artistry without the pressure of judges' scores, often featuring innovative choreography and music choices.
Speed Skating Mass Start Competition
The speed skating program featured both men's and women's mass start events. The mass start is a relatively new Olympic discipline, first introduced at PyeongChang 2018. Unlike traditional speed skating races where skaters compete in pairs against the clock, the mass start sees all competitors on the ice simultaneously, racing over 16 laps with points awarded at intermediate sprints and the final finish.
