The IOC has decided where each alpine race of the 2030 Winter Games will be held. The IOC Coordination Commission set the split in Lyon on Wednesday, 16 September. The women's and men's downhill and super-G, plus the team combined events, go to Courchevel. Giant slalom and slalom will be held in Val d'Isère. The Alpes 2030 organising committee said this settles the last open points in the venue plan.

The slopes in Savoie

According to Top Ski News, the speed races in Courchevel will run on the L'Eclipse piste. Slalom and giant slalom in Val d'Isère will use the Jauseray and Face de Bellevarde pistes. Austrian broadcaster ORF noted that this keeps the 2026 model of two alpine venues; in northern Italy those were Bormio and Cortina d'Ampezzo. The IOC and the organisers could not yet say how many spectators each site will hold, Top Ski News reported.

The IOC had already approved Courchevel and Val d'Isère as alpine venues in June. The question left open was which resort would get which disciplines. Top Ski News reported that the commission confirmed the split unanimously.

Ice sports in Lyon, speed skating at Thialf

In June the IOC also approved moving the ice sports from Nice to Lyon. Reuters reported that ice hockey was originally planned for the Allianz Riviera in Nice, but Éric Ciotti, elected last March, refused to make the stadium available. The Lyon plan is now set:

  • Ice hockey: LDLC Arena in Décines-Charpieu and the Halle Tony Garnier
  • Curling, figure skating, synchronised skating and short track: the Eurexpo exhibition centre, which will also host the main media centre
  • Olympic village: Oullins-Pierre-Bénite
  • Speed skating: the Thialf hall in the Netherlands

The arena in Décines-Charpieu will host the 2028 Ice Hockey World Championship first. Biathlon and cross-country skiing are based in Haute-Savoie, and freestyle and snowboard in the Briançonnais region.

IOC upbeat as organisers face turmoil

Pierre-Olivier Beckers-Vieujant chairs the IOC Coordination Commission. He said Alpes 2030 now has a venue master plan that is complete, final and optimised. A lot of work remains, he added, but the foundations are solid, and the commission leaves Lyon very reassured by the progress.

The commission was in Lyon from Monday to Wednesday on its second visit to France. Reuters reported that the organising committee is going through a new governance crisis at the same time. Director general Vincent Roberti was named interim president on Monday, after Edgar Grospiron left.

The next Coordination Commission meeting is planned for spring 2027. The Olympic Winter Games will run from 1 to 17 February 2030, followed by the Paralympics from 1 to 10 March 2030.
