Mid-July, five months after Milano-Cortina, and winter sport is anything but asleep. The southern hemisphere season is in full swing, ski jumping is about to launch its summer circuit, and figure skating has already mapped out its autumn. Here is what the coming weeks actually offer.
New Zealand takes center stage
While Europe waits for snow, Cardrona in New Zealand is deep into its season, which runs from late June through October 11. The biggest date on the southern calendar comes September 18-20, when Shaun White's Snow League World Challenge lands at Cardrona — an invitational event featuring 16 athletes. The circuit arrives with pedigree: its inaugural season crowned Tomita, Totsuka, Eileen Gu and Harrold as its first champions.
Ski jumping's Summer Grand Prix
The Summer Grand Prix opens in Wisla on August 1-2, with men and women jumping at the same venue. Courchevel follows on August 8-9 — the last edition there before the hill is rebuilt for the 2030 Olympics. After a stop in Rasnov on September 19-20, the series wraps up in Klingenthal on October 24-25 with a hybrid format combining an ice track and plastic matting. One notable absence: Hinterzarten, Germany's traditional summer stop, is not on this year's calendar.
Biathlon in the city
Biathlon's summer showpiece has a new home. The M4Energy City Biathlon takes place in Dresden on August 23, having relocated from Wiesbaden — a rare chance to watch the sport's stars race and shoot in an urban setting in the middle of summer.
Figure skating's autumn map is set
Figure skating announced its Grand Prix assignments on June 16, and the 2026/27 series has a clear shape. It opens in Angers, France, on October 23-25, then moves through Skate Canada in Kelowna, the Cup of China in Shenzhen, Skate America in Everett and the Finlandia Grand Prix in Helsinki before the NHK Trophy in Tokyo on November 27-29. The Final is set for Chongqing on December 10-13.
The entry lists carry star power: Olympic champion Alysa Liu headlines, alongside Shaidorov and the ice dance duo Fournier-Beaudry/Cizeron. Three-time world champion Ilia Malinin takes a double load with Skate America and the NHK Trophy, while world pairs champions Hase/Volodin give German fans a rooting interest. One caveat for the impatient: skaters' new programs are typically unveiled between late July and September, so the summer still holds reveals.
And then the mountain calls
The bridge back to full winter is already fixed. Alpine skiing opens its World Cup season in Sölden on October 24 — the same weekend ski jumping's summer series concludes in Klingenthal. The 2026/27 alpine calendar spans 94 races and runs all the way to the finals in Sun Valley on March 25, 2027. From Sölden onwards, the off-season is officially over.
