Jets Announce Suspension After Goaltender's No-Show
The Winnipeg Jets suspended three-time Vezina Trophy winner Connor Hellebuyck on Wednesday after the 33-year-old failed to report to training camp — the most dramatic escalation yet in a stand-off that has overshadowed the franchise's entire off-season.
Camp opened on September 17 with mandatory medicals and physicals. Hellebuyck was nowhere to be found. The Jets issued a brief statement announcing the suspension "for failing to report to training camp" and offered no timeline for when it would be lifted. General manager Kevin Cheveldayoff met with media the following morning and acknowledged the franchise's difficult position without closing the door on resolution, saying the situation is not "closed" — carefully chosen words from a team that insists it has not received a trade offer it considers fair.
A Trade Request That Went Public
Hellebuyck's agent Ray Petkau confirmed a trade request publicly on August 27, making official what had reportedly been brewing since early in the off-season. The move was read as a pressure tactic — an attempt to break the logjam in talks that had been simmering since before the 2026 NHL Draft.
At that draft in June, the Jets and the Buffalo Sabres came closest to a deal. Hellebuyck had reportedly been willing to waive his no-movement clause to join Buffalo, and the sides exchanged proposals across multiple rounds. No agreement materialized, however. The Sabres used their fourth-overall pick on defenceman Daxon Rudolph, and the moment passed. The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun subsequently reported that no team has put anything on the table representing "fair value" for an elite goaltender with years remaining on his deal.
The Sabres, Carolina Hurricanes, Utah Mammoth, and New Jersey Devils have all been linked to Hellebuyck by league sources, though none of those tracks appears to be approaching a conclusion.
The Contract That Complicates Everything
Hellebuyck extended his deal in October 2023, signing a seven-year contract at $8.5 million per year through the 2030–31 season. Any acquiring team inherits five remaining years at that figure — a commitment that has reportedly tempered interest from clubs that might otherwise be in the market for a goaltender of his caliber.
His most recent season makes the arithmetic harder still. In 2025–26, Hellebuyck posted a .895 save percentage — a career worst — along with a 2.86 goals-against average and a 23–23–11 record as Winnipeg missed the playoffs entirely. That represents a significant step back from the form that earned him the Hart Trophy, Vezina Trophy, and William M. Jennings Trophy in spring 2025.
A Dressing Room in Disarray
The fallout has extended well beyond the front office. Forward Kyle Connor, a long-time linemate of Hellebuyck, told reporters on Thursday that the situation had shaken the dressing room. "It feels like we had such a special group here, and for whatever reason a lot of guys in the room are heartbroken," he said. Connor added that if Hellebuyck chooses to return and recommit, "we'll welcome him with open arms."
The Jets open the 2026–27 regular season on September 29. With 11 days left on the clock, Winnipeg faces the prospect of starting the year without the only starting goaltender in franchise history to win an NHL MVP award — and no heir apparent currently on the roster.
