The captaincy announcement comes with an unusual backdrop: Bedard will not be in the lineup when Chicago opens the season on September 29. He sustained a left shoulder injury during a private training session in Vancouver on July 2 and underwent surgery six days later. The projected recovery window of approximately four months puts his return around early November.
As of this week, Bedard has been skating independently at the Blackhawks Ice Center, working through solo skill sessions with the club's skills coaches. Multiple reports suggest he may be slightly ahead of the original timeline, though the organization has not specified a target return date. He remains restricted from full-contact work.

Three seasons into his NHL career, Bedard has posted 203 points — 75 goals and 128 assists — in 219 games. His 2023-24 rookie campaign produced 22 goals and 61 points, earning him the Calder Trophy.
