Horcoff Steps Back From the GM Race
Shawn Horcoff will not be named the Detroit Red Wings' permanent general manager, according to reporting published Wednesday. The assistant GM has handled day-to-day hockey operations since Steve Yzerman was moved to a senior adviser role on July 15, and as recently as September 8 he represented the Red Wings on the NHL's league-wide GM call. Owner Christopher Ilitch, who brought in a search firm this summer, has nonetheless decided to pursue external candidates for the permanent role.
The development significantly reshapes the final week of a search that has stretched past its original Labor Day target. With training camp opening September 17, Detroit is now operating under maximum pressure without a confirmed decision-maker, leaving key hockey matters — including the Simon Edvinsson contract extension — effectively frozen.
External Names Now Lead the Race
Wednesday's reporting points to Brett Peterson, an assistant general manager with the Florida Panthers, and Scott White, a front-office executive with the Dallas Stars, as the frontrunners. Both represent a deliberate turn away from the internal-promotion model Detroit initially appeared to favor.
Peterson brings experience from a Florida organization that won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2024 and 2025, before the Carolina Hurricanes claimed the title this past spring. His familiarity with building and sustaining a championship infrastructure would be directly applicable to a Red Wings team that missed the playoffs again last season.
Earlier in the week, Jeff Greenberg — the general manager of the Detroit Tigers — withdrew from contention, citing "his commitment and desire to finish what he started" with the baseball organization. That decision ended the possibility of a high-profile cross-sport hire that had generated considerable attention in Detroit.
Where Lidstrom Stands
Last week's reporting — including a Snowpost piece published September 9 — had positioned Niklas Lidstrom and Horcoff as the leading internal candidates after Greenberg's exit. With Horcoff now ruled out, the status of Lidstrom's candidacy is less clear. The seven-time Norris Trophy winner and Hall of Famer has served as the Red Wings' vice president of hockey operations since 2022, but the latest reports frame Peterson and White as the active frontrunners without confirming Lidstrom remains in contention.
The Edvinsson Clock
The new GM will inherit an urgent priority on arrival: the Simon Edvinsson extension. The 22-year-old defenseman remains unsigned, and the CBA's deadline for an eight-year max-term deal falls on September 15 — five days away. Horcoff's interim restrictions prevent him from conducting trades, and whether he can finalize an extension before a permanent GM is named is unclear.
Edvinsson's value has climbed all summer. Vancouver locked up Zeev Buium at $9.38 million annually on an eight-year deal, setting a market benchmark that Edvinsson's camp will reference in any negotiation. Any deal that touches nine figures over its term will almost certainly require the incoming GM's explicit authorization.
Detroit must name its general manager before camp begins or risk opening the 2026–27 season with its most important off-ice decision still unresolved. Peterson and White are next to be heard from — one of them likely will be.
