Arnekleiv Has Tonsils Out After Blink Absence

Norwegian biathlete Juni Arnekleiv has had her tonsils surgically removed after chronic infections ruled her out of the Blink Festival, with more training time lost ahead.

Norwegian biathlete Juni Arnekleiv confirmed on Thursday that she had her tonsils surgically removed this week, ending months of failed antibiotic treatment and adding another interruption to a pre-season that had already been disrupted by illness.

Arnekleiv broke the news on Instagram, explaining that the procedure had become unavoidable after recurring tonsil infections resisted medication for the better part of the summer. The surgery follows her absence from the Blink Festival in Sandnes earlier this month, one of the most prominent Nordic skiing events on the summer calendar.

Antibiotics Could No Longer Hold the Infections

Arnekleiv cycled through close to a dozen separate courses of antibiotics without achieving a lasting resolution. Each round brought temporary relief before the infections returned, eventually leaving surgery as the only remaining option.

"After nearly a dozen courses of antibiotics, I had to go under the knife to get rid of those monsters in my throat," she wrote on Thursday. "Another spell without training is on the cards; it's a nuisance, but that's just how it goes sometimes."

Her measured tone reflects an acceptance of the situation, but the practical consequences for her preparation are significant. August is among the most important training months for Nordic athletes, combining high-volume endurance work with shooting drills that establish the aerobic and technical base for the winter season.

Blink Festival Missed in Full

Arnekleiv was absent from all start lists at the Blink Festival in Sandnes, which ran from 7 to 8 August and drew most of Norway's top cross-country skiers and biathletes. The event functions as a high-profile summer reference point for form and fitness ahead of the World Cup season.

The Blink Super Final on 8 August — won by Sindre Bjørndalen among the men — was one of the competitive outings she missed. For a biathlete, replacing the competitive intensity of a race under pressure, including precision shooting with an elevated heart rate, is difficult to replicate in training alone.

Olympic Relay Athlete Loses Key Preparation Weeks

Arnekleiv competed as part of Norway's biathlon relay squad at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Anterselva in February, where the relay disciplines place particular demands on team depth and individual reliability. Her standing in the national programme makes the timing of the setback notable.

A tonsillectomy typically calls for one to three weeks of complete rest before a gradual return to light training. For Arnekleiv that places a potential restart in early September at best — meaning she could lose three to four weeks of summer conditioning at a point when competitors are in the thick of their preparation cycles.

Long-Term Outlook Remains Positive

Despite the lost weeks, Arnekleiv retains a substantial margin before the 2026-27 Biathlon World Cup season is expected to open in Östersund in late November. If recovery proceeds without complication, she should have time to rebuild fitness before the season-opening sprints.

There is also a potential upside to the procedure. Chronic tonsillitis is known to drain aerobic capacity and slow recovery between hard sessions, effects that are not always obvious to the athlete in real time. Removing a persistent source of inflammation can result in improved stamina and quicker recovery — gains that may outweigh the short-term training deficit once the World Cup winter begins.

Norway's next biathlon showcase is the City Biathlon in Dresden on 23 August, where teammate Sturla Holm Lægreid is among the confirmed starters. Arnekleiv is not listed in the Dresden field.
