Olympian Sarah Nurse Inspires the Next Generation of Female Athletes
## Breaking Down Barriers in Sport
As a member of the Canadian women’s hockey team and an Olympic gold medalist, Sarah Nurse has become a role model for young girls across the country. In a recent interview, Nurse reflected on the progress she’s seen in recent years, with more female athletes competing on the national and professional stages.
“I’m not the only one who plays on the national stage or professional team anymore,” Nurse said. “To look across Team USA and see Layla Edwards, and I remember meeting Layla when I was probably in college, but she was probably like 11 or 12 maybe. And to see her growth and her development, oh my gosh, there could be like three of us playing in an Olympic game. That’s pretty impressive.”
Nurse emphasized the importance of visibility and representation for the next generation of female athletes. “It’s amazing for the next gen to be able to see,” she said. “I probably met thousands of young girls and it’s so, so beautiful. And just knowing like, hey, maybe one or two of these girls are going to end up at the tip top stage. A handful more are going to be in the PWHL, going to play college hockey. You know what I mean? There’s so many opportunities for women in sport.”
