Evan Bichon competes at Olympics months after losing mother

Canadian cross-country skier Evan Bichon delivered one of the most emotional moments of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics, competing just months after losing his mother to cancer.

Canadian cross-country skier Evan Bichon delivered one of the most emotional moments of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympics, competing just months after losing his mother to cancer.

The Canadian athlete opened up about the profound personal challenges he faced in the lead-up to the Games, revealing that his mother was diagnosed with cancer in the summer of 2025 and passed away in November. The loss fundamentally changed his preparation for what would become the most significant competition of his career.

"I lost my mom in November. So my mom was diagnosed with cancer in the summer. That kind of changed my preparation going into the games and at one point I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to compete through the season," Bichon shared in an emotional interview.

Despite the devastating circumstances, Bichon was able to continue his Olympic journey thanks to an outpouring of support from those closest to him. "That was made possible by my family and friends helping me out as well as some key supporters who really stepped up and helped me and made this possible," he explained.

Carrying Extra Emotion on Olympic Day

While Bichon approached the technical aspects of his race with the same mindset he brings to World Cup events, the emotional weight of the day was undeniable. "I've done so many races leading up to this that I was able to kind of fall back and treat it as a normal race of same nerves as I bring into a World Cup. I carried more emotion into this one," the Canadian said.

For Bichon, competing at Milano Cortina represented something far beyond athletic achievement. "Today was definitely more special than any other event I've been a part of," he reflected.

The Unseen Journey to the Olympics

Bichon's story highlights the often-overlooked personal sacrifices and challenges that Olympic athletes face on their path to the Games. His words serve as a reminder that behind every competitor stands a network of support and years of dedication.

"It's a long road to make the Olympic Games. There's so much work behind the scenes in everyone's personal lives along with their team and everybody supporting them," Bichon said. "So the perseverance it takes to stay in the game, stay committed and to perform at the highest level is probably the biggest piece to get here."

Despite the grief and uncertainty that marked his journey to Milano Cortina, Bichon's gratitude shone through. "Pretty grateful to be here," he concluded, summing up a remarkable story of resilience in the face of profound loss.
